Slept on this place, since I only remembered it as Nino's Brazilian pizza for a number of years. Glad I stopped in, since they're making super fresh tacos and have a wide selection of Mexican restaurant, and street food, not expensive, with a great atmosphere to hide out from the hustle and bustle.
Tacos are a little more on the expensive side, but freshness and well done. Recipes make up for the cost. Highly recommended.
Las Cabañas Mexican Grill is simply a hidden gem of Mexican delicacy in Berkeley. Simple have the best Super Quesadilla and best combos are either with Steak Fries or Carnitas. Another food unknown to the public but simply delicious is the Mix-All-three Fajita Plate that consist of Steak, Chicken and Jumbo Shrimp heated up in a hotplate and also on the side some rice fried or black beans with fresh Vegetables. All there menu across gives very different flavour pallet from spicy, savoury, sweet and sour. They also assortment of sauces you can choose and my personal favorite is the guac, spicy chilli and also fresh tomato which is provided for free. The atmosphere feels like you are in one of those aunthentic Mexican restaurants in Baja California surrounded by music, disco lights and 4 1080 HD Flat screen TV . The staff are super nice and also very generous in giving nacho chips for the customer. Highly reccomended place to go to
I got their shrimp taco which tasted so fresh and simply exquisite. I just wish they weren't so expensive but everything is expensive nowadays. I highly recommend this as the flavor is solid and the taco was filling without having it be too heavy.
Their "al pastor" from the grill outside is to die for. Its so juicy and flavorful. I also like that you can get pieces of pineapple (or hints of it) in the taco which so many Mexican places leave out. It combines so well with the savory meat.
I also got an "al pastor" burrito and I do think the "al pastor" they prepare i side the restaurant is a bit underwhelming. I didn't get that sweetness from the pineapple not the same flavor from when it gets prepared in the grill outside.
Their tortas are lacking and I wasn't too happy with the simplicity of the sandwich. The meat I got was "chorizo." I did appreciate that the bread was buttered and crispy!
Their "tres leches" cake slice was good but nothing that stood out to me. I did, however, notice that it must be stored frozen because mine was still icy in the middle and was more like a "tres leches" plushie which wasn't great.
While visiting Berkeley I tried this place, by far one of the best Mexican restaurants i have tried.. Top notch, friendly staff, great food and atmosphere
burrito was very meh, nothing special, kind of dry. $7 for a tiny side of rice and beans and the beans were crunchy and the rice was bland. the worst was the French fries though, pale skinny bland, absolutely no "fry" just all french. so so salty, and I love salty food but this was crazy. and you only get a little amount. the tacos and other menu items look good, just don't get the fries or rice and beans
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! My fav place for authentic Mexican food in Berkeley!! I’ve probably bought over 20+ burritos over few years. Like it for freshness, taste, Ingredient quality - the food is what matters and I like it here overall. Regardless of what you order, do get the MOST authentic Habenaro salsa (for super spicy lovers) as it’s hard to find one around! Love it. Kudos owner Angel on newly renovated location!!
We went to their re-grand opening!! Where they had $1 Tacos and it was delicious !! The fried fish taco was bomb!
We will definitely come back soon to try their weekly specials and of course, the fish taco again! Great customer service!
lovely place, i enjoyed the super veggie burrito. i like the selection of salsa. and the general vibes
